英文單字(17)《stitute 站立 / quire 尋求》

這個字和之前學到的「sist」一樣是「站」的意思，為了方便區別來幫助記憶，較長的字使用較長的意思「站立」。一個方便記憶這個拼字的方法，是注意這個字有三個「t」。

「quire」換一種說法，可以當作「想要的東西」，因想要而尋求。

prostitute 妓女(n.)、糟蹋(v.)

妓女可想像為將自己的整個身體往前奉獻出去；這個字也可做「賣淫」的動詞，不過多被轉為「糟蹋」才能的動詞；畢竟賣淫就是讓自己的身體被糟蹋，才能也算是。

constitute 構成(v.)

構成即部份的人或物站在一起來組成。

替代可以想像由下往上站出來取代原有的人事物。

destitute 一貧如洗的(adj.)

可以想像成一個人窮到站不起來。

The floods let thousands of people destitute.

institute 建立(v.)、學會(n.)

「in」在這邊當「上面」的意思。建立即為把東西立在上面；學會可以當成由許多學者建立而成的組織。

We need institute a number of measure to better safeguard the public.  
This country institute the National Cancer Institute in recent years.

acquire 得到(v.)

得到可想像成面對著尋求的東西並收下。這個字也常被用在「得到技能」上面。

He is wearing a newly acquired jacket.
The taxi driver said he wants his sons to acquire skills other than taxi driving.

acquisition 得到(n.)

I like your earrings. Are they recent acquisitions?

require 需要(v.)

需要就是想拿回尋求的東西。
