英文單字(23)《test 驗證 / cipate 取》

有受過國民教育的孩子們都再不過熟悉這個字了。我們常說的「test(考試)」基本上就是學校要「驗證」學生來確認教育程度。

「取」的意思，衍生字不多，常用的「participate(參加)」就是其中之一。

attest 證實(v.)

去驗證就是證實。

The number of old German cars still on the road attest the excellence of their manufacture. 

protest against 抗議、反對(n.v.)

向前提出驗證來挑戰對方。
 
Conservation groups have united in protest against the planned new road.
A big crowd of demonstrators were protesting against cuts in health spending.

contest 競賽(n.v.)

互相驗證對方的成果。

She's won a lot of beauty contests.
He quickly won his party's nomination to contest the elections.

detest 憎恨、厭惡(v.)

往下驗證對方的不利，或是可以說連驗證對方是什麼人都沒有興趣。

I detest any kind of cruelty.

testimony 證詞(n.)

用來證實的言詞。

Some doubts have been expressed about his testimony.

emancipate 解放(v.)

可以解釋成「e(出)+man(人)+cipate(取)」，表示將人從束縛中取出獲得自由。

That war preserved the Union (US government) and emancipate the slaves.

anticipate 預期、期望(v.)

和「expect」意思相近都是「預期、期望」，「anti」當作相反意思，還沒有拿到就會產生預期或期望。

We don't anticipate any trouble.
They anticipate having several applicants for the job.

participate 參加(v.)

取一部分代表團體中的一份子。記得這個字是不及物動詞，因此在指定地點時要加介係詞。

They expected him to participate in the ceremony.
